📍 Where to start: Zurich
Zurich is the base for this route, not Basel, Interlaken or Geneva. It's the closest major airport to the Rhine Falls (40 min), and it sits at the top of a north-to-south line through Engelberg to Zermatt — so there's no backtracking. Basel is nearly as close to the Falls but has fewer long-haul flights; Interlaken has no airport; Geneva is at the opposite end of the country.
🚆 Road trip or train?
Train is the better fit for this route. Zermatt bans private cars entirely (you'd park in Täsch and shuttle in regardless), and the Zurich–Engelberg–Zermatt line is a smooth one-way rail corridor. A car only really pays off if you're combining this with the separate Road Trip itinerary — for this route alone, skip the rental.
