🚗 Getting Around

🚗 Driving your own car

The whole route works comfortably self-drive — no toll roads on this stretch, just fuel.

D4 Tip: Old-town parking in Rothenburg and Füssen gets expensive fast. Park at a cheaper edge-of-town lot and mix in a Deutschland-Ticket (~EUR 58/month, regional buses & trains) for the short hops into the centre — cheaper than paying premium in-town parking for a car you're not driving that day.

🔑 Rental car

Book pickup at Frankfurt or Munich airport rather than a city-centre branch — airport rental counters are consistently cheaper and have a wider fleet.

🚌 Shuttle bus & rail

This trip is still doable without a car. The Romantic Road Coach (formerly Europabus) runs Würzburg → Füssen daily, mid-April to mid-October. Regional DB trains connect the towns the rest of the year, plus a local shuttle for the final stretch to Neuschwanstein.

✨ Behind the Journey — D4Explore Snapshot

  • 🍷 Why start in Würzburg, not Frankfurt: keeps the drive entirely on the Romantic Road itself rather than adding an unrelated approach leg.
  • 🏰 Why Rothenburg gets the overnight: most visitors day-trip it — staying the night gets you the empty streets after the tour buses leave.
  • 🏞️ Landsberg am Lech is easy to miss: it's not one of the "big name" stops, but its pastel riverfront is one of the most photographed unnamed views of the whole route.
  • ☀️ Go in summer if you can: the countryside stretches between towns are a real part of the experience — golden fields and green valleys, not just transit time.
