Route at a Glance

One base, four day trips: you unpack once in Lisbon and reach every gem on this list by train, bus or (optionally) a rental car for the day. No repacking, no checking in and out of four different hotels.

Day by Day

Day 1Óbidos & Nazaré — a walled town and a wave-watching beach town
🆓 Free things to do

Walk the Óbidos ramparts and get lost in the narrow streets · Try a shot of ginjinha served in an edible chocolate cup, a local tradition · In Nazaré, ride the funicular up to the clifftop Sítio district.

🎟️ Pre-book

Optional guided day tour covering both towns from Lisbon. Book on GetYourGuide →

📍 Places to see

Óbidos walled town · Nazaré beach & Sítio district

Óbidos gets busy with day-trippers by mid-morning — an early start makes a real difference to the photos and the pace.
Day 1 — Óbidos
Day 2Aveiro — the canal town nobody talks about
🆓 Free things to do

Walk the canal-side Art Nouveau facades, often called the "Venice of Portugal" · Short local bus to Costa Nova to see the famously striped fishing houses (palheiros).

🎟️ Pre-book

Moliceiro boat cruise through the canals (EUR 10–18). Book on GetYourGuide →

📍 Places to see

Aveiro canals · Costa Nova striped houses

Day 2 — Aveiro canals
Day 3Setúbal — market, coastline and choco frito
🆓 Free things to do

Browse the tiled Mercado do Livramento, a genuinely local food market, best visited in the morning while it's active · If you've rented a car, drive into Arrábida Natural Park for turquoise-water viewpoints most visitors never see.

🎟️ Pre-book

Optional car rental for the Arrábida coast road add-on. Compare rental cars on Booking.com →

📍 Places to see

Mercado do Livramento · Arrábida Natural Park

The Arrábida coast road add-on needs a car; without one, Setúbal town alone is still a full, worthwhile half-day.
Day 3 — Arrábida
Day 4Tomar — the hilltop complex most itineraries skip
🆓 Free things to do

Wander Tomar's compact old town and the riverside gardens along the Nabão.

🎟️ Pre-book

Convent of Christ entry & guided tour — a genuinely major Templar-and-Renaissance complex, on a level with Sintra's palaces. Give it a full 2–3 hours. Book on GetYourGuide →

📍 Places to see

Convent of Christ · Tomar Old Town · Nabão riverside gardens

Day 4 — Convent of Christ, Tomar

Where to Eat

Óbidos — ginjinha served in an edible chocolate cup, a genuine local tradition, not a tourist gimmick.
Aveiro — ovos moles (egg-yolk sweets), the town's signature treat, sold in shell-shaped wafers.
Setúbal — choco frito at the market or a nearby tasca; simple, cheap and genuinely local.

Behind the Journey — Insights

  • These four were chosen because each pairs cleanly with a single train or bus line from Lisbon — no overnight repacking, no wasted transit days.
  • Tomar is the one guests are consistently most surprised by — it has the scale of a Sintra palace with almost none of the crowd.
  • Go to Óbidos early. By late morning it fills with coach-tour day-trippers and loses a lot of its charm.
  • If you only have 3 days instead of 4, drop Setúbal first — Óbidos/Nazaré, Aveiro and Tomar are the strongest trio.
