Route at a Glance

One fixed base, one open choice: every version of this itinerary opens with 3 nights in Barcelona (Days 1–3). From Day 4, choose your extension — fly to Mallorca for island beaches and the Serra de Tramuntana, or take the high-speed train to Madrid for the Prado, the Royal Palace and (optionally) Toledo. Both extensions are shown in full below, including their own day-by-day plan, accommodation, transport and budget, so you can compare before deciding. A budget calculator later in this document compares the cost of each choice side by side.

Optional first-day cycling/architecture orientation tour. Book on GetYourGuide →

📍 Places to see

Gothic Quarter · Plaça Reial · Barcelona Cathedral exterior

Keep arrival day light — an early vegetarian Catalan dinner (try pa amb tomàquet + escalivada) is enough for day one. Airport transfer options: Aerobús, Rodalies rail (serves Terminal 2) or metro/taxi — choose by hotel location and mobility needs.
Day 1 — Gothic Quarter, Barcelona

📍 Places to see

Park Güell · Gràcia · Barceloneta & waterfront

Booking window: 2–8 weeks ahead for Park Güell. Park Güell's site is hilly — use the official accessible route and shuttle/taxi if needed. This is your last Barcelona night — pack for tomorrow's onward journey.

🧭 Now Choose Your Extension

From Day 4, pick Option A — Mallorca (island beaches, Serra de Tramuntana, relaxed pace) or Option B — Madrid (Prado, Royal Palace, optional Toledo day trip, city-culture pace). Both are fully detailed below, including their own accommodation, transport and cost — jump to the budget calculator to compare them side by side before deciding.

Day by Day — Your Extension

🏝️ Option A — Mallorca Extension (Days 4–6, 2 nights)

Day 4Transfer to Mallorca — fly Barcelona to Palma
🆓 Free things to do

Palma check-in · easy evening walk along Parc de la Mar and the Old Town edge.

🎟️ Pre-book

BCN–PMI flight, ~50 min airborne / 3–4h door-to-door. Compare flights on Omio →

📍 Places to see

Palma Parc de la Mar · Palma Old Town (edge walk)

Book flights 1–4 months ahead — summer carries real price pressure. Allow a full airport buffer either side; this is deliberately a light travel day.
Day 4 (Option A) — Palma de Mallorca arrival
Day 5Palma Cathedral, Old Town & Serra de Tramuntana
🆓 Free things to do

Palma Old Town walk · Portixol waterfront in the evening.

🎟️ Pre-book

Palma Cathedral entry: Book official tickets →. Optional Serra de Tramuntana / Sóller guided excursion (full day, best paired with a slightly longer stay): Book on GetYourGuide →

📍 Places to see

Palma Cathedral · Palma Old Town · Portixol

Check the cathedral's accessible entrance and terrace restrictions directly before booking. Try tumbet or coca de trampó for a reliably vegetarian dinner. On a 2-night stay, choose either the Cathedral/Old Town day or the full-day Tramuntana excursion, not both — the excursion runs 5–8 hours.
Day 5 (Option A) — Palma Cathedral
Day 6Beach morning & departure from Palma
🆓 Free things to do

Half-day at Can Pere Antoni or Playa de Palma — both accessible urban beaches, no rural-cove transfer complexity · farewell lunch.

🎟️ Pre-book

Optional coastal sailing trip instead of the beach. Book on GetYourGuide →

📍 Places to see

Can Pere Antoni beach · Playa de Palma promenade

Adapted-beach services are seasonal — verify directly before travelling. Depart from Palma (PMI) — allow full airport buffer, especially if connecting onward the same day.
Day 6 (Option A) — Mallorca beach

🏛️ Option B — Madrid Extension (Days 4–6, 2 nights)

Day 4Transfer to Madrid — high-speed train from Barcelona
🆓 Free things to do

Madrid check-in · Gran Vía & Plaza Mayor evening walk.

🎟️ Pre-book

Barcelona Sants → Madrid Atocha, AVE high-speed train, 2h30–3h15. Compare fares on Omio → or book direct on Renfe →

📍 Places to see

Gran Vía · Plaza Mayor

Book AVE tickets 1–3 months ahead — advance fares are usually stronger than any rail pass on this single high-competition route. Centre-to-centre, no airport transfer needed.
Day 4 (Option B) — Madrid arrival, Gran Vía
Day 5Prado Museum & Royal Palace
🆓 Free things to do

Retiro Park · Temple of Debod at sunset — both free, both easy walking.

🎟️ Pre-book

Prado Museum, timed entry. Book official tickets → or a guided highlights tour on GetYourGuide →. Royal Palace, official booking preferred. Book official tickets →

📍 Places to see

Prado Museum · Royal Palace · Retiro Park · Temple of Debod

Booking window: 2–8 weeks ahead for both venues. Cocido madrileño is a meat stew — choose a clearly vegetarian tapas selection in La Latina instead. The Royal Palace has an accessible route, but some historic rooms may be restricted — confirm directly.
Day 5 (Option B) — Prado Museum, Madrid
Day 6Optional Toledo day trip, or Madrid rest morning — departure
🆓 Free things to do

El Rastro / La Latina market walk (Sundays) · Madrid Río park — both free, low-effort options if staying in the city.

🎟️ Pre-book

Optional Toledo day trip: guided package on GetYourGuide →, or independent Avant train return via Omio → / Renfe →

📍 Places to see

Toledo old town (optional) · El Rastro / La Latina · Madrid Río

Toledo is steep and cobbled in the upper city — use a taxi for that section, or choose the guided accessible option. Not recommended by default for severe mobility limits — the Madrid rest-morning alternative works well instead. Depart from Madrid (Barajas or Atocha, depending on your onward route) with a full transfer buffer.
Day 6 (Option B) — Toledo or Madrid departure

💰 Budget Calculator — Mallorca vs. Madrid

The Barcelona portion (Days 1–3) costs the same either way. What changes is your 2-night extension — here's the indicative difference, per person, comparing the two choices.

🏝️ Option A — Mallorca extension (2 nights, comfort tier)

Flight Barcelona → Palma (one-way, per person)€25–120
Accommodation, 2 nights (per person, sharing twin)€105–180
Activities (Cathedral; Tramuntana excursion optional)€40–80
Local transport (bus)€5–15
Food, 2 days€90–130
Extension total per person€265–525

🏛️ Option B — Madrid extension (2 nights, comfort tier)

AVE train Barcelona → Madrid (one-way, per person)€27–90
Accommodation, 2 nights (per person, sharing twin)€170–220
Activities (Prado + Royal Palace; Toledo optional extra)€30–40
Local transport (metro)€8–20
Food, 2 days€100–140
Extension total per person€335–510

Bottom line: the two options land within roughly €50–70 per person of each other on the low end, and are essentially a wash on the high end (Mallorca €265–525 vs. Madrid €335–510). Madrid's accommodation and train fare run a little higher; Mallorca's flight and optional Tramuntana excursion can close that gap quickly if you add them. For a party of 4, double these per-person figures as a starting point, then confirm family/connecting room rates directly.

Choose Mallorca if: you want beach time, a slower pace and island scenery. Choose Madrid if: you want museums, palace architecture and the option of a Toledo day trip — cost should not be the deciding factor here, experience should.

All figures above are indicative estimates only, not live quotes or a guaranteed price — actual cost depends on your exact travel dates, booking lead time, hotel choice and season. Always check current fares and rates on the official links throughout this document before booking.

Where to Eat

Barcelona — pa amb tomàquet + escalivada (usually vegetarian, confirm) and crema catalana for dessert. Bombas are traditionally meat-filled — ask for "bomba de verduras."
🏝️ Mallorca — tumbet (layered aubergine, potato, pepper) and coca de trampó are reliably vegetarian; confirm no meat garnish. Ensaimada pastry may contain pork lard — ask the bakery.
🏛️ Madrid — cocido madrileño is a meat stew, not vegetarian. Choose a clearly vegetarian tapas selection on a La Latina crawl instead; bocadillo de calamares (squid) is also not vegetarian.
Everywhere — request "sin carne y sin pescado" and check stocks, garnishes and gelatin. Lunch runs 13:30–15:30, dinner after 20:30; book ahead at popular spots.

Behind the Journey — Insights

  • This itinerary is built as one fixed base plus an open choice on purpose — Barcelona's 3 nights work as a complete short break on their own, so the extension should match what you actually want more of: coastline, or culture.
  • Don't turn Mallorca into a day trip. Flights make it technically possible, but airport overhead and limited island reach mean at least one overnight is the better decision — 2 nights is the practical minimum for this pace.
  • Madrid's AVE train beats flying on this specific route — centre-to-centre in under 3.5 hours, no airport transfer, and advance fares usually undercut any rail pass for a single one-way leg.
  • The two extensions cost within roughly €50–70 per person of each other at the low end — treat this as a genuine preference decision, not a budget one.
  • Toledo is worth adding to the Madrid option only if you have the extra half-day margin and no severe mobility constraints — the steep, cobbled upper town is the limiting factor, not distance.
